Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When she was young the father was a carnival barker, leaving Ruth's mother without a choice other than to become a cleaner woman and waitress to feed the family. Ruth was born in a poor neighborhood of Boston Massachusetts in which she went to high school. After only two school years, Ruth left to pursue an acting profession. The path she chose did not come without challenges. When she was in New York, her first assignment was to shoot stills for crime magazines, her dream of performing in the theater she longed for was not available. As a hat check girl at a nightclub she quit and returned to Boston. In the New England Repertory Company was the first job she had as a regular actor. Earned money performing during the daytime as an usherette. She earned a bachelor's certificate in drama at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
